Maruti Suzuki to Launch Flex Fuel Vehicles and Expand Biogas Initiatives in India

Maruti Suzuki is poised to enter the flex fuel vehicle (FFV) market this fiscal year, marking a significant step in its commitment to carbon neutrality in India. The announcement, made by Suzuki Motor Corporation during its technology strategy briefing, underscores the automaker's dedication to innovative fuel solutions. FFVs are designed to operate on multiple fuel blends, typically incorporating ethanol and gasoline, presenting a cleaner alternative to traditional petrol engines.

In tandem with the rollout of FFVs, Suzuki is actively working on a biogas initiative that aims to harness the manure from India's vast cattle population—approximately 300 million—to produce carbon-neutral biogas. This biogas will be utilized in compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, which currently account for nearly one-third of Maruti Suzuki's vehicle sales. By collaborating with local dairy cooperatives to establish biogas production plants, Suzuki not only addresses energy needs but also contributes to improving rural income through the purchase of cow dung.

Toshihiro Suzuki, the representative director and president of Suzuki Motor Corporation, emphasized the socio-economic significance of this project. He noted that purchasing cow dung could enhance the livelihoods of rural communities while aligning with national objectives for energy and fertilizer self-sufficiency. The first biogas plant is anticipated to initiate operations in 2025.

Beyond its ventures into alternative fuels, Suzuki is also advancing lightweighting technologies to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions across its vehicle lineup. This initiative is part of a broader strategy that includes the introduction of lean battery electric vehicles tailored for emerging markets. The recently unveiled e-address scooter exemplifies Suzuki's commitment to affordable and eco-friendly transportation solutions.

As the automotive landscape evolves, Maruti Suzuki finds itself under pressure to accelerate its electrification efforts amid rising competition from rivals like Tata Motors and Hyundai. By promoting its readiness for E20 fuel, introducing FFVs, and expanding its biogas initiatives, Suzuki is signaling a robust and diversified approach to achieving carbon neutrality in India. This strategy not only positions the company as a leader in sustainable automotive solutions but also reinforces its pivotal role in the country's transition toward a greener future.
