Massive Land Conversions Impact Farmland in Midwest
Significant agricultural land is being repurposed for solar farms, data centers, and industrial parks across the Midwest. This trend raises concerns about the future of agricultural capacity in the region.

In the Midwest, over 9,000 acres are set for conversion along a proposed I-65 technology corridor between Indianapolis and Purdue University. Specific projects include 2,100 acres for a solar farm near Eaton Rapids, Michigan, and a similar 2,100-acre solar farm northwest of Walton, Indiana.
In eastern Howard County, Indiana, 1,300 acres are being transformed into another solar installation. Additionally, in Delaware, Ohio, over 200 acres will become three subdivisions, while 1,445 acres on the west side of Lebanon is allocated for a data center complex. The ongoing repurposing of agricultural land poses risks to regional food production and long-term sustainability.
