Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor Vetoes Data Center Development Resolution
Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor Edna DeVries vetoed a resolution aimed at facilitating a private data center project on borough land. The plan, sponsored by Assembly members Ron Bernier and Dmitri Fonov, requires a five-member vote to override the veto during an upcoming Assembly meeting. The resolution sought to partner with Terra Energy Center Corp. to attract investors for the project, which could create high-tech jobs and generate property tax income. The mayor expressed concerns about risks associated with the agreement and environmental impacts of data centers.

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor Edna DeVries vetoed a resolution to assist Terra Energy Center Corp. in developing a data center on borough land. The resolution, sponsored by Assembly members Ron Bernier and Dmitri Fonov, aimed to partner with Terra for marketing the facility over two years.
The Assembly must vote to override the veto to proceed. DeVries cited risks and environmental concerns related to data centers as reasons for the veto. Terra Energy holds a temporary permit for land near Port MacKenzie and plans to connect power infrastructure to a coal plant project. The resolution follows an official Request for Interest from the borough to attract high-tech developments.
