Matter of Trust Latam Utilizes Human Hair for Water Pollution and Soil Degradation Solutions in Mexico City
Matter of Trust Latam is deploying human hair as a low-cost solution to combat water pollution and soil degradation in Mexico City. The project focuses on using hair waste from salons in Xochimilco to preserve chinampas, an ancient agricultural system. Human hair's properties allow it to absorb pollutants, aiding in water purification and improving soil health through various applications, including biofertilizers and evaporation reduction techniques.

Matter of Trust Latam is implementing a project in Mexico City that repurposes human hair to address water pollution and soil degradation, particularly in Xochimilco. The initiative aims to preserve chinampas, an ancient agricultural system.
Hair fibers can capture pollutants such as oils, grease, and heavy metals, serving as a natural filtration system when placed in fine mesh nets submerged in water. Eight water-cleaning devices have been installed in Xochimilco, and hair mats are used to reduce soil evaporation by up to 71%.
Additionally, human hair is processed into a biofertilizer to enhance soil microbiology. In 2025, over 100kg of hair was collected from salons, promoting a circular economy approach. The project has received recognition from various institutions.
