Maumee City Council to Vote on 12-Month Data Center Moratorium

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

Maumee City Council will vote on a resolution to impose a 12-month moratorium on the establishment of data centers and the conversion of existing structures into data centers. The moratorium aims to give the city administration and council time to review relevant federal and state regulations.

The council meeting is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. on Monday. Currently, there are no confirmed data center development plans in Lucas County except for one in Oregon, with discussions happening concurrently.

Nearby Waterville has enacted a six-month moratorium, while Waterville Township has implemented a 12-month moratorium. The only operational data center in northwest Ohio is Meta's site in Wood County, projected to be fully operational by 2027. Concerns regarding data centers include their size, energy consumption, environmental impact, and potential tax revenue.
