Mauritius Collaborates with ITC on Climate Change and Trade Strategy
Mauritius, in partnership with the International Trade Centre (ITC), has published a report titled 'Trade and Climate Change in Mauritius' as part of the Climate Competitiveness Project funded by the European Union. Launched in June 2023, this project aims to enhance the ability of developing countries to align their trade policies with national climate objectives and engage in the WTO's Trade and Environmental Sustainability Structured Discussions (TESSD).
The report highlights the challenges posed by lithium-ion battery waste from electric vehicles, which contribute to approximately 25% of the country's greenhouse gas emissions. To address recycling issues and scale limitations, Mauritius is fostering regional cooperation and extended producer responsibility programs to create sustainable battery recycling solutions. The collaboration with neighboring islands aims to consolidate battery waste volumes for efficient shipping and recycling.
