Mayo Councillor's Plea for Enhanced Windfarm Community Benefits Fails
Mayo County Council declined a proposal to defer the North Connacht 110kV project agreement to negotiate improved community benefit funds from windfarms. The scheme, approved in 2023, aims to enhance electricity infrastructure but has faced criticism for inadequate compensation to local communities amid rising energy costs.
The Mayo County Council approved the North Connacht 110kV project agreement, which involves an underground cable installation between Ballina and Ballaghaderreen. Independent councillor Harry Barrett sought to defer this decision to negotiate higher community benefit funds from windfarms, which he claims have remained stagnant for over 15 years, not adjusted for inflation.
While some councillors expressed sympathy for Barrett's concerns, the majority emphasized the importance of proceeding with infrastructure development to support the energy grid and attract inward investment to Mayo. The Community Benefit Funds are derived from contributions mandated by renewable energy projects.
The council has reached out to the Commission for Regulation of Utilities regarding the community benefit fund but awaits a response. Failure to address community compensation could lead to ongoing discontent among residents affected by wind energy projects.
