MEFISTO Project Receives £378,000 to Enhance Methanol Fire Safety in Shipping
The Lloyd's Register Foundation has funded the MEFISTO project with £378,000, led by DBI to address fire safety for methanol-fuelled ships. Collaborating with Maersk, OMT Group, Safetytech Accelerator, RelyOn, and JKUAT, MEFISTO aims to simulate engine-room conditions, evaluate safety systems, and create tools for ship design and crew training, addressing regulatory gaps in methanol safety.

The MEFISTO project, funded with £378,000 by the Lloyd's Register Foundation and led by DBI, aims to address fire safety challenges in methanol-fuelled shipping. Collaborating with Maersk, OMT Group, Safetytech Accelerator, RelyOn, and JKUAT, the project will simulate real-world engine-room conditions to evaluate fire detection and suppression systems.
It seeks to generate empirical safety data and develop practical tools for ship design and crew training, responding to regulatory shortfalls related to methanol's unique fire hazards. Findings will be shared to facilitate the safe adoption of methanol as a marine fuel and support the transition to low-emission fuels in the maritime sector.
