Meidensha Ships World's First Palm Ester 154kV Transformer to TEPCO
Meidensha Corp has developed and shipped the first 154kV, 200MVA transformer utilizing palm fatty acid ester as insulating oil to TEPCO Power Grid. This innovation aims to reduce reliance on mineral oil and promote environmentally sustainable power infrastructure.

Meidensha Corp has successfully shipped a 154kV, 200MVA transformer that employs palm fatty acid ester as insulating oil to Tokyo Electric Power Company Power Grid. This marks the first implementation of palm-based oil in a forced-oil-air-cooled transformer of this capacity, aimed at minimizing environmental impact by replacing mineral oil.
The transformer includes features such as reduced power losses and lower carbon dioxide emissions over its lifespan. Additionally, it offers high biodegradability and reduced viscosity compared to mineral oil, enhancing cooling efficiency.
The development reflects a broader trend in the industry toward sustainable practices in power infrastructure. However, the palm oil supply chain faces scrutiny over potential labor and environmental issues.
