Mejillones Ammonia Energy (MAE) has received environmental approval for its $2.5bn green hydrogen and ammonia project, Volta, planned for Antofagasta, Chile. Approved by Antofagasta's Environmental Assessment Commission in December 2025, the project aims to produce up to 620,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, in two phases of 310,000 tonnes.

It will utilize a 600MW solar park, battery storage, and the local electrical grid, along with wastewater from Mejillones. Construction is set to begin in 2027, with commercial production expected by 2029.

Initially, the project will prioritize local demand before exploring export opportunities. Chile's government has set a national goal of 25GW of green hydrogen production capacity and allocated $2.8bn in tax credits for related initiatives.
