Mekong River Nations Urge Laos on Hydropower Project Impact Assessment
Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam have called for enhanced environmental assessments concerning the Luang Prabang hydropower project in Laos, which has a capacity of 1,460MW. Emphasis is placed on mitigating transboundary impacts to safeguard lower Mekong countries' interests.

Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam have requested Laos to enhance its assessments regarding the 1,460MW Luang Prabang hydropower project. During a Mekong River Commission session on June 30, the three nations acknowledged Laos's submission for prior consultation while emphasizing the need for comprehensive environmental impact evaluations and effective mitigation strategies.
Cambodia's official response on April 2 highlighted the potential adverse effects on lower Mekong countries. Previous experiences indicated insufficient stakeholder engagement in hydropower developments, raising concerns about impacts on fisheries and agriculture. The commitment to ongoing dialogue and monitoring from Laos is crucial to ensure regional cooperation and minimize negative consequences.
