Melbourne Tram Network Receives $76 Million for Accessibility Upgrades
The Victorian government is allocating $76 million to enhance accessibility at tram stops across Melbourne, addressing long-standing compliance issues with the Disability Discrimination Act. This investment aims to improve transport infrastructure for individuals with disabilities and other mobility challenges.
The Victorian Budget 2026/27 includes $76 million for tram network upgrades, focusing on accessible stops along key routes including High Street in Northcote and Thornbury. Planning will begin for additional level access tram stops on Sydney Road in Brunswick and Coburg, as well as Keilor Road in Niddrie.
Since 2014, 102 level access platforms have been constructed, yet as of 2020, only 38% of trams were compliant. Recent initiatives include a new substation at Wattle Park to support larger trams on Route 70, increasing capacity by over 70%.
The budget also allocates funds for safety enhancements at several railway stations. These developments are crucial for improving public transport accessibility across the city.
