Met Office Introduces Supercomputer for Enhanced Weather Forecasting in Scotland
DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE
The Met Office has launched a new supercomputer, enhancing weather forecasting accuracy in Scotland and the UK. The upgrade focuses on improving predictions for rain, snow, cloud, and fog, crucial for industries such as aviation.
It extends storm forecasting from seven to ten days, facilitating better preparation for severe weather events. The new system processes 200 to 300 terabytes of data daily via Microsoft Azure Cloud. This upgrade is the most significant in over three years, providing more realistic rainfall intensities and better cloud representation, which is essential for managing flight schedules and public services.
