Meta Funds Seven Gas Power Plants to Support Data Center Expansion
Meta Platforms is investing in seven new gas power plants to meet the energy demands of its expanding data centers, particularly in response to increased power needs driven by AI technology development. This initiative, in partnership with Entergy Corp, will enhance the capacity for the Hyperion data center in Louisiana, USA, with a total projected electricity supply exceeding 7 GW.

Meta Platforms has committed to funding the construction of seven new gas power plants, projected to provide 5.2 gigawatts (GW) of electricity, as part of its strategy to meet the growing energy demands for its data centers, especially driven by artificial intelligence. This partnership with Entergy Corp aims to support the development of the Hyperion data center in Louisiana, with a total electricity capacity expected to surpass 7 GW when combined with three previously approved plants.
Additionally, Meta will invest in supporting infrastructure including a 240-mile transmission network and energy storage systems. This agreement raises concerns about environmental commitments due to increased reliance on natural gas, despite Meta's pledge to support 2.5 GW of renewable energy development.
