Meta plans to construct a nearly 1 million-square-foot data center in Kuna, Idaho, with an investment of $800 million, expected to open in late 2026. This facility is part of the Gemstone Technology Park project, which aims to handle up to 800 megawatts of power demand.
The project has garnered mixed reactions from local residents, with some seeing economic benefits while others fear loss of farmland. Concurrently, Meta is developing the Hyperion project in Richland Parish, Louisiana, projected to be its largest data center at 4 million square feet, with a $27 billion investment in a joint venture with Blue Owl Capital.
Construction in Louisiana began in December 2024 and is scheduled for completion by 2030. The southern U.S. is becoming a key area for data center development due to lower land and energy costs, with major projects also planned in Texas and other states, driven by demand for AI and cloud storage.
