Meta's Data Centers Consume 284 Million Liters Annually, Not Draining Rio Grande
Meta's Los Lunas data center utilizes approximately 284 million liters of water per year, sourced from municipal aquifers, not the Rio Grande. This situation highlights the ongoing water crisis in the region, primarily driven by climate change rather than the operations of Meta's facilities.

Meta's data center in Los Lunas withdraws water exclusively from local municipal aquifers, confirmed by a March 2025 agreement with Greater Kudu LLC. In 2023, the center consumed about 75 million gallons (284 million liters) of water, a figure misrepresented in social media narratives.
The Rio Grande faces a hydrological crisis exacerbated by climate factors, with record spring temperatures and reduced snowpack contributing to water shortages. While local conditions vary, the primary causes of the river's drying are unrelated to Meta's operations.
The company aims for water positivity by 2030 and has funded environmental projects to restore water to the ecosystem. Ongoing concerns about the impact of groundwater pumping on the river remain unresolved.
