Metsä Group Initiates Wood-Based Carbon Capture Plant in Rauma
Metsä Group plans to construct a wood-based carbon capture facility with a capacity of 100,000 tonnes annually, leveraging public funding. This project aims to replace fossil materials and could significantly impact emissions in Finland's industrial landscape.

Metsä Group is launching a pre-engineering project for its first commercial wood-based carbon capture plant in Rauma, aiming for an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes of captured CO2. The company has applied for funding through a reverse auction from Finland's Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, which could cover up to 30% of total investment costs.
The environmental permit application was submitted in December 2025, with a decision expected later this year. The project supports Metsä's strategy of enhancing fossil-free operations and improving pulp production competitiveness.
Market uncertainties remain, as the development of value chains utilizing captured carbon dioxide is ongoing, necessitating concurrent investments from multiple stakeholders. In 2025, Metsä Group reported sales of EUR 5.8 billion and employed approximately 8,800 people.
