Mexico Joins UN iCOAST Project to Promote Sustainable Coastal Tourism
Mexico is participating in the U.N.-sponsored iCOAST project to enhance sustainable tourism along its coast. The initiative aims to improve competitiveness and sustainability in coastal destinations by adopting low-carbon models, reducing pollution, and promoting a circular economy. Managed by Pronatura Noroeste, iCOAST Mexico targets areas including Baja California and Jalisco, benefiting over 877,000 people and emphasizing gender equality in tourism wealth distribution.

Mexico is joining the U.N. iCOAST project to develop a sustainable tourism model focused on coastal areas. The initiative, announced by Tourism Minister Josefina Rodríguez, aims to increase competitiveness by implementing low-carbon practices, reducing pollution, and promoting a circular economy. iCOAST Mexico will target coastal destinations in Baja California, Sonora, and Jalisco, among others, impacting over 877,000 people.
The program seeks to reverse biodiversity loss and ensure equitable job creation. Managed by Pronatura Noroeste, the project is pending review by the GEF Secretariat before implementation, which will involve coordination with state governments and the private sector for sustainable financing.
