Mexico Joins UN iCOAST Project to Promote Sustainable Coastal Tourism
Mexico is joining the U.N. iCOAST project to develop a sustainable tourism model focused on coastal areas. The initiative, announced by Tourism Minister Josefina Rodríguez, aims to increase competitiveness by implementing low-carbon practices, reducing pollution, and promoting a circular economy. iCOAST Mexico will target coastal destinations in Baja California, Sonora, and Jalisco, among others, impacting over 877,000 people.
The program seeks to reverse biodiversity loss and ensure equitable job creation. Managed by Pronatura Noroeste, the project is pending review by the GEF Secretariat before implementation, which will involve coordination with state governments and the private sector for sustainable financing.
