Michelin Launches Smart Tyre Technology to Enhance Mining Efficiency in Africa
Michelin has introduced its MEMS 4 technology, aimed at reducing operational costs for African mining companies by predicting tyre failures. This innovation supports the Better Mining strategy and addresses challenges such as rising fuel prices and ESG obligations.

Michelin's MEMS 4 technology provides real-time monitoring of tyre conditions, potentially saving mining operators millions annually by predicting failures before they occur. This system continuously tracks tyre temperature, pressure, and GPS data, allowing for proactive interventions that can extend tyre life by 10% and improve haulage efficiency by 1-2%.
The initiative, part of Michelin's Better Mining strategy, aims to enhance safety, productivity, and reduce environmental impact. Already in use at Valterra Platinum's Flatreef Project, MEMS 4 has improved fleet availability and maintenance scheduling. As mining companies face pressure to optimize costs, such predictive technologies are becoming essential for operational efficiency.
