Michigan Approves Permit to Reduce Emissions at Graphic Packaging's Kalamazoo Mill

HYDROGEN

Michigan regulators are proposing an air permit for Graphic Packaging International's Kalamazoo mill that aims to reduce air pollution by retiring two older boilers and an outdated production line. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) has outlined plans to decommission the K3 production line and shut down Boilers 8 and 9, resulting in an estimated annual reduction of 100 tons of nitrogen oxides, 79 tons of carbon monoxide, 27.6 tons of volatile organic compounds, and smaller reductions in other pollutants.

This permit will also allow increased production limits on the newer K2 coated recycled board machine without raising daily production caps. The plan addresses ongoing odor issues linked to hydrogen sulfide emissions, which have raised health concerns in the surrounding community.

The facility's odor management plan must include measures for monitoring and mitigating odors. The permit is not expected to trigger additional federal oversight as it would reduce overall pollution.
