Microsoft Acquires Land in West Michigan for Potential Data Centers
Microsoft Corporation has purchased over 270 acres in Allegan County, Michigan, for more than $48 million with plans for potential data centers. The site, located near U.S. 131, is complemented by additional property in Gaines Township, Kent County.
Local economic development group Lakeshore Advantage is assisting Microsoft in the initial stages. Concerns from nearby residents include increased electricity demand and potential rate hikes due to the data center's operations.
A public hearing for a rezoning request was cancelled due to high attendance. Microsoft is currently collaborating with the state's environmental agency to draft a development plan, which includes commitments to local infrastructure improvements and minimizing environmental impact. Cooling systems for the data centers will utilize air-cooled and liquid-to-chip methods, and measures will be taken to limit noise and light pollution.
