Microsoft to Invest $10 Billion in AI Data Centers in Japan
Microsoft plans to invest $10 billion in Japan over four years to establish AI-centric data centers and infrastructure. This move addresses Japan's increasing demand for cloud services and AI technologies.

Microsoft will invest $10 billion in Japan over the next four years to build data centers focused on artificial intelligence. This initiative was announced during a meeting between Microsoft President Brad Smith and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
The investment aims to bolster Japan's technological infrastructure in collaboration with SoftBank Group and Sakura Internet. This follows a previous commitment of $2.9 billion for AI development in Japan announced in 2024.
The plan also includes funding for enhancing cybersecurity cooperation with Japanese government agencies and training one million engineers alongside NTT and NEC. Microsoft's broader environmental goals include achieving carbon negativity and being water positive by 2030. Such investments may strengthen Japan's position in the global AI market but face challenges like space limitations and high energy costs.
