Microsoft's Fairwater Facility to Use Water Equivalent to a Restaurant Annually
Microsoft's new Fairwater facility aims to address environmental concerns by minimizing water usage and improving cooling efficiency. This initiative aligns with the company's strategy to expand its Azure cloud business while maintaining community standards and sustainability.

Microsoft's Fairwater facility in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, which opened in September 2025, is designed to use the same amount of water annually as a single restaurant. This is achieved through innovative vertical architecture that densely packs GPU racks, enhancing cooling efficiency with a nearly zero ongoing water requirement.
As Microsoft expands its Azure cloud business, now with over 500 data centers across 80 regions, CEO Satya Nadella emphasizes the importance of community trust and environmental responsibility. Rising concerns regarding data centers' impacts on local utilities, including water and electricity, necessitate ongoing efforts to ensure sustainable practices and community engagement.
