Mid Suffolk Council to Discuss Approval for 200kW Energy Storage Project Amid Fire Safety Concerns
The Mid Suffolk District Council Planning Committee is set to review a proposal for a 200kW Energy Storage System at Progress Way, amid fire safety concerns raised by local officials and the Eye Town Council. While the National Fire Chiefs Council assessed the fire risk as low if managed properly, concerns about potential pollution and evacuation protocols for nearby businesses persist. The proposal is part of AMP Clean Energy's broader plan to develop over 1,250 Battery Boxes across the UK in the coming years.

Mid Suffolk District Council Planning Committee will consider plans for a 200kW Energy Storage System (ESS) at Progress Way in Mid Suffolk Business Park, Eye, on January 14. The ESS, designed to store electricity flexibly and low-carbon, will import power when demand is low and export it during peak times.
The National Fire Chiefs Council indicated a low likelihood of fire if managed correctly, but acknowledged the significant fire risk during faults. Concerns have been raised by local officials, including district councillor Lucy Elkin, about potential air and water pollution from fires and the lack of immediate evacuation protocols for nearby businesses, such as Susan Whymark Funeral Service Ltd and B&M Seafoods Wholesaler.
Eye Town Council has opposed the application, citing an increase in energy projects in the area, while Mid Suffolk's Environmental Health team highlighted issues with the noise report. AMP Clean Energy plans to develop over 1,250 Battery Boxes in the UK in the next three years.
