Mid Wales Launches Phase 2 of Clean Energy and Transport Pilots to Decarbonise Rural Economies
The Whole System Research and Innovation for Decarbonisation (WSRID) programme in Mid Wales enters Phase 2, focusing on testing and refining solutions in real-world settings. Funded by the Welsh Government, four projects will develop prototypes and conduct live demonstrations targeting agriculture and forestry emissions. Key projects include a digital tool for dairy farmers, a mobile slurry dewatering process for energy generation, community energy management systems, and exploring green hydrogen for timber transport. The aim is to validate economic and societal benefits while reducing risks.

The WSRID programme in Mid Wales is advancing to Phase 2, funded by the Welsh Government, to test real-world decarbonisation solutions. Four projects are being developed: Water to Water is creating a digital tool for dairy farmers to evaluate on-farm microgrids for energy needs; Lafan CYF is implementing a mobile slurry dewatering process to generate energy from livestock farming; HARVEST aims to establish a community-based energy management system; and Challoch Energy is exploring green hydrogen for timber transport. Phase 2 aims to gather evidence on viable decarbonisation strategies tailored for rural areas and assess the economic and societal impacts of these innovations.
