Minister Browne Addresses South Wicklow Social Housing Crisis with New Strategies
The social housing waiting list in Arklow approaches 1,000 applicants, prompting Housing Minister James Browne to outline new measures. Key initiatives under the Delivering Homes, Building Communities strategy aim to expedite housing delivery amid ongoing demand.

As of late 2025, over 930 applicants are on the social housing list in Arklow. Housing Minister James Browne confirmed that while Wicklow County Council has surpassed its 2022-2025 targets by 125%, ongoing population growth and infrastructure deficits maintain high demand.
The operational Arklow Wastewater Treatment Plant has enabled the approval of several housing projects. Notable developments include Potter's View, a 128-home public-private partnership, and a 74-home council-led scheme at Potter's Bay.
A focus on derelict sites for conversion into social homes is underway, particularly in high-demand areas like Main Street. By Q3 2026, a more aggressive Housing Delivery Action Plan will be implemented to support the national goal of 72,000 new social homes by 2030. The pressure remains on local authorities to meet housing needs swiftly.
