The Gulf of Izmit cleanup project is 70% complete, with 2.4 million cubic meters of sludge removed. Following this success, a similar initiative will be undertaken in the Gulf of Fethiye.

The Gulf of Izmit cleanup project, part of the Marmara Sea Protection Action Plan initiated in 2022, has removed 2.4 million cubic meters of bottom sludge, achieving 70% completion. This project, executed in collaboration with Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, aims to improve marine biodiversity, as evidenced by the return of seagrasses and marine life.
Minister Murat Kurum announced plans to extend similar cleaning efforts to the Gulf of Fethiye, where additional dredging vessels have been deployed. Furthermore, Turkey is preparing to host COP31, emphasizing commitment to environmental initiatives and circular economy practices. The ministry urges local municipalities to enhance wastewater management as part of ongoing environmental responsibilities.
