Minneapolis Microgrid Initiative Nears Completion at Sabathani Community Center
The Resilient Minneapolis Project (RMP) is nearing completion of community resiliency hubs, including the Sabathani Community Center and the Minneapolis American Indian Center. The project, developed by Xcel Energy and the city of Minneapolis, aims to establish microgrids in disadvantaged neighborhoods.
Xcel has secured $9 million in regulatory approval, with additional funding from federal and state sources. The Sabathani microgrid will feature solar, battery storage, and geothermal systems, while Renewable Energy Partners is developing a larger microgrid for four Minneapolis Public Schools buildings.
The Sabathani hub is set to integrate real-time grid management technology to optimize energy use and maintain operations during outages. The project has faced challenges, including a federal grant withdrawal affecting part of the solar installation. Completion is expected by the end of 2026, but future microgrid expansion may be limited by reduced federal support.
