Mistral AI Launches Open-Weight Models to Compete with OpenAI in July
Mistral AI plans to introduce a new Mixture-of-Experts model with early access starting in July, aiming to reduce reliance on US cloud providers. This initiative aligns with a €4 billion investment strategy to create a European-controlled AI cloud infrastructure.

Mistral AI will launch a new Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) model in July through an early access program. This model features a sparse architecture designed to provide advanced capabilities at lower inference costs compared to dense models.
To enhance its data center capabilities in France and Sweden and reduce dependence on US cloud providers, Mistral has acquired infrastructure startup Koyeb. The company aims to establish a fully European-controlled AI cloud, addressing the growing interest among European governments and businesses to lessen their reliance on American technology giants. This strategic pivot may reshape the competitive landscape of AI in Europe.
