Mitsui OSK Lines and Hitachi Collaborate on Floating Data Centers
The first floating data center is projected for completion in 2027. This initiative aims to utilize seawater for cooling, reducing energy requirements compared to land-based facilities.

Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) is partnering with Hitachi Systems to develop floating data centers, with the first unit expected to be operational by 2027. The approach involves converting an existing vessel into an offshore data center, leveraging seawater for cooling to decrease energy consumption.
The project is anticipated to have a construction timeline of approximately one year and aims to cut costs by repurposing ships. Hitachi will oversee IT infrastructure and customer solutions, while MOL will manage the vessel, its conversion, and related maritime operations.
