Mizoram Government Spends Rs 685.93 Crore on External Power Purchases Amid Limited Local Generation
During the current financial year, the Mizoram government reported spending Rs 685.93 crore on electricity from external sources. Power Minister F. Rodingliana stated that local generation was only 41 million units, primarily from hydroelectric and solar projects. Revenue from consumers stood at Rs 245.33 crore, showing a disparity between spending and revenue. Efforts to enhance local power generation include the Tuirini small hydropower project, costing Rs 76.98 crore, and the proposed 132 MW Tuivai hydroelectric project.

The government collected Rs 245.33 crore from electricity consumers, indicating a significant gap between external power expenditure and revenue. The government aims to reduce reliance on external power by enhancing local generation capacity, including the Tuirini small hydropower project in Aizawl district, costing Rs 76.98 crore, expected to generate 24 megawatts. Additionally, a Detailed Project Report for the 132 MW Tuivai hydroelectric project near the Manipur border has been completed.
