Mizoram Spends Rs 685.93 Crore on External Electricity Purchases Amid Low Internal Generation
Mizoram spent Rs 685.93 crore on external electricity procurement in the last financial year, with internal generation at 41 million units. The government generated Rs 245.33 crore from consumers but faces a significant cost-revenue gap. Efforts are underway to achieve power self-sufficiency, including a new 24 MW small hydropower project and two additional hydroelectric projects.

Mizoram has incurred Rs 685.93 crore in external electricity purchases for the financial year, as disclosed by Power Minister F Rodingliana. Internal power generation was low, totaling only 41 million units from hydro and solar sources.
The government collected Rs 245.33 crore in revenue from consumers, but procurement costs exceeded this amount. Despite the financial gap, the state has maintained zero debt related to these power purchases.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma initiated a Rs 676.98 crore small hydropower project in Aizawl district, set to generate 24 MW. Additionally, the Detailed Project Report for a 132 MW Tuivai hydroelectric project is complete, and the report for the Tlawng project is expected by September.
