Modernization of U.S. Minuteman III ICBMs to Sentinel Program Underway
The U.S. Air Force is transitioning from the Minuteman III to the Sentinel ICBM system, with costs projected at $141 billion. This update aims to enhance nuclear deterrence amid global adversary upgrades, despite being significantly over budget and delayed.

The U.S. Air Force is replacing the aging Minuteman III ICBMs with the new Sentinel system, with an estimated cost of $141 billion and current budget overruns at 80%. Over 450 new launch silos and 50-75 additional support facilities are being constructed to facilitate this modernization.
While the transition has faced delays, the Air Force maintains that operational capabilities will remain intact during the changeover. Commanders emphasize that the Sentinel will be more efficient and require less maintenance than its predecessor. The initiative responds to upgrades in nuclear arsenals by adversaries like China, Russia, and North Korea, reflecting a continued commitment to maintaining a credible nuclear deterrent.
