Modified Marine Bacteria Enhance Olivine Weathering to Capture CO₂
Researchers engineered marine bacteria to significantly increase the weathering rate of olivine, enhancing CO₂ capture. This biotechnological advancement demonstrates potential for climate regulation but requires further research for industrial scalability and cost-effectiveness.

A team of researchers genetically modified Alteromonas macleodii, a marine bacterium, to enhance the weathering of olivine, capturing CO₂ from the atmosphere. The modified bacteria achieved a 2.6-fold increase in olivine weathering in continuous-flow bioreactors, capturing 0.5 grams of CO₂ daily per reactor.
This approach addresses limitations of natural weathering processes that can take hundreds of thousands of years to significantly impact carbon balance. The study indicates that operational parameters will be critical for developing an efficient environmental technology. The team is exploring large-scale applications, including using ponds similar to wastewater treatment systems, to validate the ecological impact and potential profitability of metal recovery alongside CO₂ capture.
