Monterey County Jail Implements Solar and Battery System to Cut Energy Costs
The Monterey County Jail in Salinas, California, has initiated a solar and battery storage project projected to save over $12 million. This project includes a 1.243-MW solar array and a Tesla battery system, aiming to meet 55% of the facility's energy needs.

A solar array and battery storage system at the Monterey County Jail is expected to save $12 million through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The project features a 1.243-MW solar carport and a 1.043-MW/2.087-MWh Tesla battery, generating over 2,000 MWh of electricity annually.
Developed by Sunrock Distributed Generation and Mynt Systems, it received PTO in December 2025 after navigating complex federal energy policy changes. The installation prioritizes safety, utilizing lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in response to battery safety concerns. The project underscores the potential for sustainable infrastructure amidst shifting policies, enhancing energy resilience and cost predictability for the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.
