Morocco Develops Pumped Water Storage for Renewable Energy
Morocco's Ifahsa project, backed by a $265 million World Bank investment, aims to store 300 MW of solar and wind energy. This initiative enhances energy reliability and supports the integration of an additional 1 GW of renewables into the national grid.

The Ifahsa project in Morocco will utilize a pumped water storage system to manage surplus renewable energy, with a capacity of 300 megawatts. Funded by the World Bank at $265 million, the facility will pump water to a high reservoir using excess solar and wind energy.
This method allows for energy generation through gravity-fed turbines when needed, acting as a large-scale battery. Expected benefits include the reduction of nearly 1.7 million tons of CO₂ emissions annually and the creation of approximately 820 direct jobs. The project is also projected to attract nearly $1 billion in private investments for further renewable initiatives.
