Moses Lake Council Supports Replacement of Ice Rink Chiller System
Moses Lake city council members expressed support for replacing the outdated chiller system at the outdoor ice arena. Parks and Recreation Director Doug Coots presented two replacement options, with a new air-cooled chiller estimated to cost about $209,823 after installation, compared to a repair cost of $25,500. The second option, an ammonia-based system, could exceed $3 million. Council members agreed that the first option is more sustainable and could extend the rink's operating season.

Moses Lake city leaders supported replacing the 30-year-old chiller system at the outdoor ice arena. Parks and Recreation Director Doug Coots outlined that repairing the current system would cost approximately $192,885, leaving the city with $25,500 after insurance.
He proposed two replacement options: an air-cooled chiller for about $209,823 or an ammonia-based system potentially costing between $3 million and $5 million. Council members favored the first option, citing concerns about sustainability and safety with the ammonia system, which would require additional staffing.
Coots indicated that a new system could extend the ice arena's season by a week. The council plans to seek funding approval from the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee.
