Mozambique Government Seeks to Keep South32's Mozal Aluminium Smelter Operational
Mozambique's government is making efforts to ensure the continued operation of South32's Mozal aluminium smelter, as stated by Minister Estevao Pale. South32 plans to place the plant under care and maintenance by March, incurring a $60 million cost, due to unsuccessful negotiations for a power deal with the government.

Mozambique's government is actively working to keep South32's Mozal aluminium smelter operational. Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Estevao Pale, emphasized the government's commitment. In December, South32 announced plans to place the smelter under care and maintenance by March, incurring a $60 million one-off cost, following unsuccessful negotiations for a power supply agreement necessary for the smelter's energy-intensive operations. The negotiations with the government and power suppliers have been ongoing for years.
