MTN Group Leads $45M AI Investment with Industry Giants in ODC for AI-Enhanced Cell Towers
MTN Group, alongside Nvidia, Nokia, and Cisco, has invested $45 million in ODC, focusing on AI-native radio access networks. This investment is aimed at addressing Africa's connectivity challenges by enabling localized AI processing at cell towers, which is essential given the continent's lack of data centers and high operational costs.

MTN Group has invested $45 million in a Series A funding round for the ORAN Development Company (ODC), which specializes in AI-native radio access network technology. This investment, supported by Nvidia, Nokia, and Cisco, aims to decentralize AI processing closer to operational sites, addressing the unique challenges faced in African markets, such as high connectivity costs and data sovereignty mandates.
ODC's Odyssey platform integrates AI into mobile architecture, allowing cell towers to handle tasks like image recognition and fraud detection locally, thus mitigating reliance on distant data centers. MTN's strategy includes a proposed $2 billion acquisition of IHS Towers to enhance infrastructure capabilities for deploying AI-RAN technology without third-party dependencies.
The investment positions MTN to navigate regulatory challenges regarding data processing within national borders, fostering sovereign AI initiatives. However, significant hurdles remain, including the costs of upgrading legacy systems and the availability of skilled labor.
