Mulilo Secures Financial Close for 76 MW Mercury Battery Storage Project
Mulilo has reached financial closure for the 76 MW/304 MWh Mercury Battery Energy Storage System project, part of a R15-billion investment in renewables. This project is a key component of South Africa's plan to enhance battery storage capabilities, alongside other selected bidders contributing to a total of 615 MW/2,460 MWh.

Mulilo has achieved financial close on the Mercury Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project, with a capacity of 76 MW/304 MWh, located near Viljoenskroon in the Free State. This project is part of a larger effort involving eight preferred bidders selected in December 2024, collectively aimed at developing 615 MW/2,460 MWh of battery storage with a total investment of R12.8 billion.
The Mercury facility will operate under a 15-year power purchase agreement with the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA) and connect to the Mercury Main Transmission Substation. Mulilo's expanding BESS portfolio now totals 3,508 MWh across nine awarded projects. This development is crucial for enhancing grid stability and supporting renewable energy growth in South Africa.
