Nachtigal Hydropower Plant Achieves 3.6 TWh Output Amid Persistent Outages in Cameroon
Cameroon's Nachtigal plant has generated 3.6 TWh of electricity since May 2025, yet power outages are still prevalent. The situation underscores systemic issues in transmission and distribution that must be addressed to enhance electricity reliability.

The Nachtigal Hydropower Plant, operational since May 2025, has delivered 3,613,785 MWh (3.6 TWh) to Cameroon's national grid. Despite its 420 MW capacity and a high availability rate of over 94%, cities continue to experience power outages due to inadequate transmission and distribution infrastructure.
The plant connects to the Nyom II substation via a 51-kilometer, 225 kV line, but the responsibility for delivering electricity to consumers lies with other entities. The persistence of outages raises questions about the overall effectiveness of the electricity system, suggesting that the challenges now stem more from operational governance and infrastructure limitations than from generation deficits. Financial sustainability is also a concern, as unpaid bills threaten the sector’s stability.
