Namibia to Launch First Green Hydrogen-Powered Freight Train in 2026
Namibia plans to test its first heavy-duty freight locomotive powered by green hydrogen, in partnership with CMB.Tech Namibia, TransNamib, and Africa Global Logistics. The locomotive is being assembled in South Africa and aims to modernize the rail sector while reducing carbon emissions. It will operate between Walvis Bay and Windhoek, completing 50 round trips during the trial. The dual-fuel engine allows operation on both diesel and hydrogen, ensuring service continuity.

Namibia is set to test its first heavy-duty freight train powered by green hydrogen later this year, positioning itself as a pioneer in Africa for such technology. This initiative is a collaboration between CMB.Tech Namibia, TransNamib, and Africa Global Logistics.
The locomotive is being assembled in South Africa and aims to enhance rail operations while lowering carbon emissions. It will operate between Walvis Bay and Windhoek, with an initial plan for 50 round trips.
The locomotive features a dual-fuel hydrogen engine that allows it to switch to diesel if hydrogen is unavailable, ensuring continuous service. The hydrogen will be sourced from an off-grid plant at Walvis Bay, making the project a significant step in modernizing Namibia's rail infrastructure.
