NASA Prepares for Artemis 2: First Crewed Moon Mission in 50 Years
NASA is finalizing preparations for Artemis 2, the first crewed mission to the Moon since 1972, set for February 2026. The Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion capsule will be transported to launch pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, beginning around December 17.
This operation is crucial, as it transitions the spacecraft from a controlled environment to real launch conditions. Teams are addressing technical issues, including replacing a cable and valve. A significant test, the 'wet rehearsal,' will occur in January, simulating launch day operations with over 700,000 gallons of cryogenic propellants.
The mission will include four astronauts orbiting the Moon for ten days, serving as a precursor to Artemis 3, which aims to land humans on the lunar surface by 2027. This mission is part of NASA's strategy for sustainable lunar presence, ultimately paving the way for future Mars missions.
