NASA Selects Centaur V Upper Stage for SLS to Enhance Artemis Lunar Missions
NASA is revamping its Artemis lunar exploration program, focusing on the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. The agency plans to simplify the launch system and reduce mission intervals. A new upper stage, Centaur V, will be procured from United Launch Alliance (ULA) without a competitive bidding process. This change aims to enhance mission efficiency and support a long-term human presence on the Moon. The first crewed lunar landing under Artemis is now scheduled for 2028.

NASA is modifying its Artemis lunar program, specifically the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. Plans include simplifying the launch system and reducing mission intervals. A new upper stage, Centaur V, will be supplied by United Launch Alliance (ULA) through a non-competitive contract, as it meets technical and schedule requirements.
This shift aims to facilitate a sustained human presence on the Moon and enhance future deep space exploration. The Artemis 2 mission is set for April 2024, while Artemis 3 is now a test flight scheduled for 2027, with the first lunar landing targeted for Artemis 4 in 2028.
