NASA's Crawler-Transporter 2 to Support Revised Artemis Program for Lunar Missions
SPACE ECONOMY
NASA's Crawler-Transporter 2, certified as the largest in its category, transports the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket to launch platforms at the Kennedy Space Center. The vehicle, which weighs 3,000 tons and consumes 388-390 liters of diesel per kilometer, has been operational since 1965.
The Artemis program has been restructured, with Artemis III now focusing on technology tests in low Earth orbit instead of a lunar landing. Crewed landings are now targeted for Artemis IV in 2028. NASA's goal is to standardize its SLS configuration to reduce complexity and enhance mission frequency, aiming for one lunar landing per year starting after 2028.
