Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman has proposed a statewide moratorium on battery storage facilities, citing safety concerns after a recent lithium-ion battery fire in Warwick. Blakeman criticized Governor Kathy Hochul's expansion of these facilities, labeling it unsafe for first responders and communities.

He emphasized that lithium-ion battery fires can escalate rapidly and release toxic chemicals. New York has approved over 6,000 battery storage projects since 2019, aiming for a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

Hochul's office defended the expansion, stating that New York has enacted stringent regulations for battery storage facilities. Blakeman, who opposes offshore wind projects, argues for caution until battery systems are proven safe. He has emerged as the presumptive GOP nominee for governor, with President Trump endorsing his candidacy.
