National Grid Withdraws Plans for Six Battery Storage Projects on Long Island
National Grid Ventures has withdrawn plans for six battery storage projects across Long Island while continuing to work on an overhaul of its Montauk facility. The proposed plants in West Babylon, Southampton, Far Rockaway, Port Jefferson, Wading River, and Glenwood Landing represented hundreds of megawatts of potential energy storage.
The New York Independent System Operator previously listed 60 battery-storage proposals for Long Island in 2025, which has now been reduced to 20. National Grid stated it is not planning to develop additional battery sites beyond the two currently operational on the South Fork.
New York aims for 6,000 megawatts of battery storage by 2030, but many towns have moratoriums on such facilities due to past fire incidents. The existing South Fork facilities have been in operation since 2018 under a contract with LIPA, which is part of broader efforts to enhance energy infrastructure and grid stability.
