Native Title Holders Claim Cultural Site Destruction by Rex Minerals in South Australia
The Narungga Nation Aboriginal Corporation alleges that Rex Minerals has begun mining operations without a cultural heritage plan or proper agreements, potentially violating the Aboriginal Heritage Act. Legal representatives have called for federal intervention to halt operations, emphasizing the risk of further cultural site destruction.

Rex Minerals has initiated mining at the Hillside copper site without a formal agreement with the Narungga Nation Aboriginal Corporation (NNAC), which claims cultural sites are being damaged. The operation, expected to yield 75,000 tonnes of copper and 60,000 ounces of gold annually, was acquired by Salim Group's subsidiary in 2024.
NNAC's lawyer has requested the federal government to issue stop-work orders due to non-compliance with the Aboriginal Heritage Act. Despite a 2011 agreement concerning heritage management, NNAC asserts that Rex Minerals has not fulfilled its obligations.
Concerns include the clearing of culturally significant areas and the destruction of many artefacts. This situation highlights ongoing tensions between mining developments and Indigenous rights, posing risks to both cultural heritage and operational continuity for Rex Minerals.
