NATO Status of Forces Agreement Prohibits Tax-Free Benefits for Commercial Enterprises in Germany
Customs officials in Wiesbaden, Germany, have clarified that the NATO Status of Forces Agreement does not extend tax- and duty-free privileges to commercial enterprises, including home-based businesses. This ruling prohibits the use of U.S. Army in Europe and Africa-plated vehicles for business purposes, such as delivery or paid transportation, requiring businesses to register their vehicles in the German system and making them ineligible for tax-free fuel.

Customs officials in Wiesbaden, Germany, have clarified that tax- and duty-free privileges under the NATO Status of Forces Agreement do not apply to commercial enterprises, including home-based businesses. This restriction includes U.S.
Army in Europe and Africa-plated privately owned vehicles, which are designated for personal use only. Utilizing these vehicles for business purposes, such as goods delivery or paid transportation services, is not allowed. Businesses must register their vehicles in the German system and are ineligible for tax-free fuel.
