Navajo Nation Approves Solar Project Amid Community Concerns Over Environmental Impact

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTUREENERGY STORAGE

A solar and battery storage project is advancing on a 4,500-acre lease within the Navajo Nation, approved by the Navajo Nation Council's Resources and Development Committee. The project, operated by Painted Desert Power Solar Site LLC and constructed by Navajo Power, will feature a 750-megawatt solar generation and battery storage system.

Local residents express concerns regarding the project's approval process, transparency, and its proximity to an unremediated uranium mine. AES Clean Energy will operate the project and has partnerships to supply power to data centers, raising questions about energy usage.

The lease is approved for 25 years with potential renewal. Community members have voiced issues with the approval process, alleging misrepresentation and a lack of oversight, while the project is expected to export most of its power outside the Navajo Nation.
